In 1987, it was approved for human use to treat onchocerciasis (river blindness), a parasitic disease caused by Onchocerca volvulus. It later gained approval for treating other parasitic infections such as strongyloidiasis, scabies, and lice. Its success in controlling neglected tropical diseases earned it global recognition and a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015 for its role in improving global health.
